Hygge by Reluin Hygge by Reluin
Title means 'an absence of anything emotionally overwhelming; taking pleasure from the presence of gentle, soothing thing' -other-wordly@tumblr

Fanart for Scriverner's Moon(from the Fever Crumb book series). The ending of this book made me so happy, it almost makes up for the terrible ending of the previous book.
I'm going to Ireland/London next week, hopefully it'll inspire me to practice more scenery like this :D

Like always, critiques would be loved!

hygge is a danish word that is used to describe when something is cozy rather than the definition that the link gave you.. :) I think the word Content has the same qualities as tumblr says Hygge has.. Any way.. AWESOME ART! <3 :D

You know I've never that definition of hygge before (usually something to do with food, candles, warmth and/or friends) but it is absolutely perfect ^^
The picture is nice and gives off a comfortable feeling; I like it :)

i feel like there should be more shade on the right side of the main mountain in background.and the ground beneath the mammoth feet should show their weight and size more. smush the ground more because they are so heavy. ott this piece is beautiful! adding to my faves!

Everything you draw has this wonderful balance of colors and huge load of emotion to it?? Seriously, those feather plants are too precious and the glacier? Too beautiful. I also love the texture on the ground and generally-
what brushes do you use?
Also the title is beautiful- inspiring picture!

hey sorry I'm a bit late replying, just noticed this message again ;v; Thank you so much like always for the really wonderful comments! I mostly use the Oil Pastel Large brush in PS, but coyotemange's fur brushes are fun too!
Using Other-wordly has made all my titles sooo much better haha, it's a cool site!

Love the colours and your unique atmosphere! I like that you blurred dogtails in the foreground, nice little detail :D
The only thing i would suggest is to push your values a little bit more? Make the shadows a little darker and the lights a little bit brighter. I think it would really capture the magnificence of the scene!
Great work as usual! <3

To the Contrary of ObligatoryOnsen's commentary, I actually think the Ocean is fiine.
Why? because those ocean usually look like that, there shouldn't be a fine gradation, and the gradation with the play of light that is there is completely correct in your painterly style.
I reaaaaallly love this image... which is partially because I am quite fond of mammoths, but that's also because the people drawn looks great, the athmosphere breathes at me like a cosy heating system in a frosty room and everybody just seems elated. Ofcourse it's not perfect (I'm not sure if it was intended, but the big ice blocks rather resemble a mountain of snow to me...) and there seems to me something slightly odd about the mountain in the back seeming slightly hilly and then rocky at the same time, though that's probably just me...
I also like the feather-like plantheads through the fields illustrating spring coming back or something.
I think it displayed Hygge very well, and that's the feeling it gives me too.
Thank you for sharing ^^

(sorry for the late reply! I was traveling and then have been quite busy.)
thanks very much, I'll mess around with it a bit anyway to see if I can improve it all though (:
It was a really sweet scene in the book, I'm glad this conveyed that well enough to you!
I did have a bit of trouble with the ice block/mountains, as they're not my usual subject to paint;;

The colours are beautiful, but you should try to push the depth more, especially in the ocean area.
The lack of gradation there makes it seem pretty flat. It also seems as if it doesn't quite line up with the rest of the horizon line.
That's my only remark really.
Reluin Featured By Owner Mar 9, 2013
Thanks very much for the help! I'll experiment with the depth and see if I can push it more, and try to make the horizon line clearer. Now that I see it it's bugging me haha. Thanks for pointing these things out!

There seems to be no movement in the position of the Mammoths' feet, that could use improvement, otherwise everything else seems to sway with the wind. Maybe touch the hair of the people with movement as well (wind). :)
Reluin Featured By Owner Mar 9, 2013
ah I see what you mean about the lack of movement in their feet, I'll definitely try to fix that. Thanks for the help! (:

Looks great! I really like this one. But since you wanted critique, I think some of the shadows (like near the elephants' feet) can be darker.
Pencil-guy Featured By Owner Feb 11, 2014
don't really agree with that. For one, the shadows are already pretty dark and fairly saturated, making those even darker would give them more presence and break the composition. The eye would immediately focus on those dark patches. This is pretty much pointless, as there is nothing going on around the mammoth's feet...
I kinda like it as it is. Also, love the brushstrokes here :)
Reluin Featured By Owner Mar 9, 2013
Thanks for the help!! I see what you mean, I'll work on that.
