Kites by Reluin Kites by Reluin
Putting together 2 of my favorite things, fish kites and big trees. Trying to learn how to paint nature scenes better. Something new for me, I'd really love to hear any critiques! (:

Thanks everyone for all the comments and watches the other day!! I'm really busy with college apps right now so I haven't said thanks to everyone personally, but I do appreciate it!<33

The textures and shadows are all very nice. It reminds me of my pretend excursions into the wild jungles of Jumanji when I was small. I imagine this would be a wonderful tree to have your kite in:)

saw this in your tumblr way back and always thought it's a pretty concept<3 where do I start!
I just love the tree's color and texture! along with the foliages. (I actually love how the leaves around are so varied!)
My favorite part here is the lighting and that little detail in the bottom (that little fish with a reflection in the water : D)

hey, thank you! This one was fun, just started as an experiment and the concept/lighting/little details all slowly formed while working on it! There's soo much variation in plants in tropical areas, it's really amazing to me ;v; Actually the Philippines is a tropical area, isn't it? It must be interesting living there (:

yes it is! I do live in the city so there's really not much nature all around :( but out of town there's alot of pretty places, beaches and mountains to go to :D
I sort of wish we could experience autumn and winter here though ;-;

oh good, as long as the pretty places are easy to visit :>
aw! I bet winter and autumn are good times to travel though, since they're not tourist seasons in most places. We have too much winter here, it makes the summer so short there's barely enough time to grow a garden ;v;

This is gorgeous! I really like the values and lighting.
There's something very appealing about fish kites, like a feeling of nostalgia or wonder. I don't know what exactly, but they're lovely regardless. <3

I think I spent about 20 hours! A little quicker than usual for me, since it's easier to use textures and special brushes when painting nature scenes (:

OH my GOSH??
I saw this on tumblr and couldn't wait for it to be fully finished and posted here and man, it was definitely worth the wait.
You probably hear this all the time, but your concepts are just amazing! Also, the coloring is basically the most beautiful thing ever, the lighting is just gorgeous.
I adore how you can see the single beams of light breaking through the leafs and how well you textured the tree is outstanding. Also, you made a great impression of a big variety of flora!
The colors are just too wonderful, oh god. ;u;
I really like how you put that kid there too, not only does it add even more life too this, but it also shows how huge the tree actually is. I also sort of put myself into the kid's position and therefore basically get sucked into the scene.
Truly wonderful work! :heart:

Thanks! I'm really happy with how much it improved from the sketch haha. I had so much fun with the colors here, photoshop makes it so easy to tweak things until they look just how you want. You're really spoiling me with all the nice compliments here, I don't know what to say! thanks again ;v;

Alright critique coming up! From someone who could *never* express the talent you exhibit here, so bear that in mind. :P You say you need to practice nature scenes?! I'd say you're joking. First of all, the trees, vegetation and such, are so well done that the thumbnail that cropped up when I logged into DA today looked like a photograph (that's why I was drawn here).

However, I would say that if *anything* I'd say you might want to work on the kites a bit. There's something about them that doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the piece here. I'm not sure what it is, and it's not like they stick out like sore thumbs or anything, but perhaps it's the lighting on them - how light calls through them, the shadows for the wiring... perhaps... The eyes..? Somehow you've got to pull of translucent. I suspect for something like a kite, you're used to painting them illuminated by bright sunlight, or at least not in shadow as these are.

One other thing makes them look a little out of place, and that's that at least to what little I know of kites, you'd need quite a breeze to keep the ones you've drawn flying, and they do all look like there is some kind of breeze, the direction of which is given away by their alignment. Now maybe it's my science background talking to me when I see most of them swinging the same way that says: hang on a minute, that's a dense forest - first of all the vegetation seems undisturbed, and secondly in such a cramped and sense forest that'd have to be one *hell* of a wind rushing through to ignore the ways that the trees would break the stream of airflow yet there's no leaves and such rushing past to make that seem the case. Certainly the water below is tranquil (which I love by the way, the only thing I'd change here is the kites!) and the person in the picture doesn't seem blustered from the wind at all.

If I might make a suggestion, I think perhaps with your chosen setting, the following might work better - especially as judging from the look of your piece here you probably already know how to pull this off quite well: try floating fish lanterns. It would mostly remove the need to shadows on a moving object interplaying with sunlight that may also be moving as it is partially shaded by the moving surroundings. Also, you could play with the glow from them hitting the objects nearby, giving an orange, blue (or whatever) tint to patches of this dark wood. Bonus: we're already used to seeing floating lit objects defying gravity even when there is no wind or anything to keep them up - hot air baloons for example. You wouldn't need wind at all, and no wind I think would suit this picture well. If you were featuring things closer to the top of the canopy where the canopy is less dense and more light is getting through, *that's* where you'd toss them a little with a breeze or a wind.

Down here in the depths of the wood, there is calm, there is quiet. Anyway... I hope that helps a bit. Really beautiful painting regardless what I've said though. Also: I'm not sure how may people would notice any of the stuff I have mentioned in critique, so don't take it to heart too much. It's still an exceptionally impressive piece of work to my eyes. :)

Woah I really appreciate the long thoughtful comment! Really nice of you to type this up. I agree with you that kites need the most work, I'll try to get the lighting more fitting, add some shadows and such. Lately a lot of my work has terrible logic flaws like the wind vs trees thing, thanks for pointing it out! I'll think about it and work on it myself, either by making more evidence of wind near the top or changing them to lanterns as you said (floating glowing fish lanterns sound really beautiful, a great concept!) Anyway thanks again for the critique, I'm really glad to get such a helpful comment! (:

Oh good I'm glad it was well-received! Really though your work is very good. That's the only reason why I took the time to criticise :P LOL! Because I think what you did was so lovely, so close to what I'd think of as being perfect, it doesn't seem as though it'd be that hard for you to reach it. I mean seriously, a standard above the rest as it were. Very good.

I've got a science background so if that can ever be of use to you feel free to bug me and I'll see if I can answer any query you have!

And you've hit the frontpage again ^^
Maybe because they're one of your favourite things is why it turned out so good.
Also, is the lowest kite partially in the water, or... to me, the perspective seems odd there.
I'm saying that since it looks like the lowest kite is connected to the tree, which has a shadow on the water, but the kite is not in the water, so it must be hangint a little more to the front, which it is incapable of because it seems connected to the tree...
If that makes sense :I
For the rest it looks really cool... "kite fishing" would be a great fantasy hobby, like with flying living kite fish that could take many shapes and sizes... That'd be really cool - like catching a dragon fish kite... and other "exotic kites".
I like it quite a lot, you've done well ^^

Is that so? I'm never online when it happens, aw ;v;
You always give me useful comments! I see what you mean about the shadow vs perspective, will edit that. Very interesting kite fishing idea too, just like regular fishing but in reverse(you have to go find the string you want to pull in..) :D
