The Book of the Tale of a Thousand Nights by Reluin The Book of the Tale of a Thousand Nights by Reluin
touhou x 1001 arabian nights!
Already similar with fantastic (far- or middle-)eastern lands, tons of characters, lots of stories as a part of a whole~~
Scarlet Devil Mansion group + Marisa, Reimu, Alice, and Yukari. Not dressed up as any really specific characters from 1001 nights(but I'm sure there's magicians, priestesses, vampire princesses in there somewhere), except for Patchouli as Scheherazade - my idea here is Patchouli reading 1001 nights, and daydreaming of that world and everyone else as they would be in it.

While researching for this these tumblrs were super helpful-[link], [link], it was also really cool to look through this-[link] :> Title here is from a 9th century manuscript fragment, 1st known published mention of the 1001 nights!

Critiques would always be really really welcome! ! <3

I know nothing of 'TouHou', but this is a superb depiction of the atmosphere of imagination that surrounds the reader of a good (or GREAT) story. The interweaving of the 'inner eye' with the 'magical' aura surrounding a fascinating read is so much like this pic, vaguely unreal, but totally entrancing. I LOVE THIS!

This piece is so beautiful! I love the muted-yet-bright colors, the intricate details (such as the smoke and all the little designs), and and the smooth shading and lines. I wish I could draw such a beautiful background - it's hard not to mess up the proportions, in my opinion, yet you did such a fabulous job with it.

I also enjoy all the activity; it is very fun identifying all of the characters and seeing what style of clothing you used for each specific character. You had an original idea, too. :)

I hope you do well in the competition!

Thanks so much for the great comment! <3 I don't think proportions aren't too difficult if you understand perspective well enough and do a sketch before drawing, maybe try that if you have trouble. And yeah I had soo much fun designing outfits for all of them, my favorite step although most of the designs are covered up by the poses @v@ thanks again for the really kind words!

hnggggh okay so I'm just commenting now but I already saw this before and I was very much in awe! your way and patience of drawing details always amazes me!
anyways I really really adore the colors! yellows purples and reds just makes everything looks so warm and so very vibrant! it really has a magical feeling to it.
also I love the foreground character's jewellery and subtle henna tattoo : D

my slight critique would be to maybe brighten only a certain spot in a picture where you want the viewers to focus (on the foreground maybe?) I stumbled upon a link in tumblr some composition tips and how the viewer's eyes look around the picture. [link]

overall, I still think this picture is fantastic! detail wise and color wise, it's very rich <3

oh gosh thanks so much for the kindness youu<3 ;///; Since you're the queen of perfect colors, I'm soo happy you like the color scheme, and eek henna tattoos are so fun I had to stick that in there @v@ There's so many great little things you can find from references I can never resist trying to stuff my pictures with as much as possible;;

Oh wow that link is the best, Kali is the best, how have I not seen that! *v* You're right my values are a lil fractured right now, for what you're thinking maybe I should try darkening most things except for the light falling through the window on the foreground?

you're forever welcome renluin! <3 hnggh and I'm still learning colors so I'm not a super expert! /sob
haha yes Kali is pretty awesome, her drawings are so clean and so well composed <33

also I think your idea could work! it really depends on where you want the viewer to focus? If it's foreground, you could push the shadows more in the areas where the light doesn't touch in the foreground, I think it'll give it more contrast so the viewer will notice it first.

as for the background part, I think slightly less contrast is already good! since it's farther away from the viewer
(light would be more atmospheric I think? think like when you view a mountain far away you can see it's really really washed up in sky blue or something like this [link])

still, I think the intricate details you placed in the foreground really helped me focus on that part!

Yeah I'd love to take some classes by Kali someday! So much art skill *v*

oh I think I get it, I'll try that out!
I love the atmospheric light thing you're thinking of mmm it looks so cool in that photo! I think I'll push that a lil more here.
Thanks for taking the time to think about this!! I got some critique for it at NPD too, gonna work on this some more soon <3

Under that rug Patchouli's leaning on, that's why it's all lumpy.

HA! Somebody's going to the finals. I find this composition very well presented and the overall atmosphere fits the concept.
Even though, there are some minor changes which could greatly enhance the visibility of important elements.
Patchouli is the main subject in this, but if you shrink your eyes and pay attention to the contrast, she's almost hidden as just a framing element of the piece. The book still detaches well, though. Maybe lending a little brightness to Patchy as well could fix her hiding. Those golden diamonds behind her are bright unnecessarily, you might tone them down like on other parts of the picture.

The same brightening up could be used on important scenes - maybe the bg characters are important to you. Nevertheless, this is a great painting and I hope to see a work like this getting classified. Even the crossover theme was rather original, congratulations.
